Two more cough syrups under scanner in MP

Bhopal, Oct 7 (UNI) In the wake of several children perishing after consuming Coldrif cough syrup in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district, two more cough syrups have been found to contain large quantities of the deadly chemical diethylene glycol. An inquiry report by the Food and Drug Administration says that Relife and Respifresh TR, both manufactured in Gujarat, have been found to be substandard.
Officials said that a process has been initiated for immediately banning both syrups that contained diethylene glycol many times higher than the limit of 0.1 per cent. This may result in kidney failure and brain damage. Between September 26 and 28, drug inspectors sent 19 samples from medical stores and hospitals for analysis and four syrups were found to be unsafe.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav directed stringent action against those responsible and removed Drug Controller Dinesh Maurya. A special investigation team comprising drug inspectors from Jabalpur, Chhindwara, Balaghat and Mandla districts has been constituted.
