Trump questions Netflix–Warner Bros. deal citing market concentration

Los Angeles, Dec 8 (UNI) US President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed concern over the blockbuster Hollywood deal that has sent shock waves through the media industry - Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros - reported Variety.
Speaking to reporters while arriving at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, Trump said the multibillion-dollar takeover raises serious questions about market concentration.
The streaming giant, he noted, already holds “a very large market share,” adding that the deal “could be a problem.” He suggested the White House would play a role in determining its fate, saying, “I’ll be involved in that decision.”
Trump’s comments come as federal regulators evaluate whether the nearly USD 83 billion acquisition should move forward, amid growing backlash within Hollywood. Many industry insiders fear the merger could heighten consolidation and trigger antitrust issues.
Despite his caution, Trump praised Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos, who recently met him at the White House, calling him “one of the greatest” figures in the movie business.
If approved, the takeover would give Netflix control of HBO Max and Warner Bros. Studios, home to classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane, as well as modern hits such as Barbie.
The streamer would also gain rights to globally iconic franchises including Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and DC superheroes like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.
However, the deal does not include Warner Bros.’ linear TV networks. Discovery, CNN, and other broadcast assets would be spun off before any sale is finalised.
Warner Bros. Discovery signalled in October that it was open to a sale after receiving several unsolicited offers. Netflix ultimately edged out competition from Comcast and Paramount Skydance, the media company led by David Ellison, a known Trump ally.
