Toxic teaser triggers obscenity row, KWC seeks CBFC action

Bengaluru, Jan 13 (UNI) Kannada actor Yash’s upcoming film ‘Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups’ has landed in controversy with allegations of obscenity against its teaser, prompting the Karnataka State Women’s Commission to seek action from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) following a complaint by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The teaser of ‘Toxic’, released on January 8 to coincide with Yash’s 40th birthday, introduced him as a character named Raya and marked his first project after the blockbuster ‘KGF: Chapter 2’ in 2022.
While the teaser quickly went viral and drew widespread attention, it also attracted criticism from certain political and social groups, who alleged that some visuals were obscene and sexually explicit.
Taking cognisance of the complaints, the Karnataka State Women’s Commission wrote to the CBFC, asking it to take appropriate action as per rules.
The commission’s secretary, in a letter to the certification body, referred to a petition filed by Usha Mohan, Karnataka state secretary of the AAP, and sought verification of the allegations along with a report on the action taken.
Earlier, leaders of the women’s wing of the AAP’s Karnataka unit had met officials of the commission and submitted a formal complaint.
In her petition, Usha Mohan alleged that the teaser contains obscene and explicit content that adversely affects the social well-being of women and children.
She claimed that the teaser was released publicly without any age restriction, making it easily accessible to minors, and alleged that the visuals undermine the dignity of women and insult Kannada culture.
The party demanded strong action, including removal of the teaser from social media platforms.
Adding to the controversy, social activist Dinesh Kallahalli filed a separate complaint directly with the CBFC, addressing it to chairperson Prasoon Joshi.
He described the teaser as grossly obscene, sexually explicit and vulgar, and expressed concern over its unrestricted circulation on social media.
Citing provisions of the Cinematograph Act, 1952, the Certification of Films Rules and CBFC guidelines, he argued that such content violates standards of decency, morality and social responsibility, and is not protected under the constitutional right to freedom of expression.
Directed by Geetu Mohandas, ‘Toxic’ has so far revealed only a teaser and first look. The film is being shot simultaneously in Kannada and English, with dubbed versions planned in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and other languages.
The project marks Yash’s much-anticipated return to the screen, even as the teaser controversy continues to draw attention ahead of its theatrical release.
