There is a problem in the distribution of Polish films: Joanna Lapinska

Kolkata, Nov 8 (UNI) Joana Lapinska, the Artistic Director of the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, on Saturday drew attention to the pressing challenges confronting Polish cinema, particularly the issue of film distribution, during her address at the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) here.
Focusing on the evolution of Polish cinematography, Lapinska described it as an era marked by "diversity and dynamism." She highlighted the dynamic coexistence of veteran filmmakers such as Krzysztof Zanussi, Agnieszka Holland and Pawel Pawlikowski, alongside a new generation of innovative voices.
"Even if we look at the number of submissions from last year to the Polish Film Festival, which I represent here, we received more than 50 feature films every year. And this year, almost 200 Polish shorts were submitted to our festival.
"So, it was very important for me to create a significant space at the festival for this cinema, to be able to talk in a more detailed way about where we, as a cinema, are going, where we are heading."
Lapinska also underlined the financial struggles young directors face.
"Sometimes, what's difficult in Poland nowadays is the financing of the films. I think they will talk more about the budgeting, how difficult it is to close the budget, and these young people really struggle, really do their best with the support of our industry to be able to make their first and second films."
She also drew attention to the growing success of Polish children's cinema and the country's investment in film education.
Lapinska reiterated her optimism despite the difficulties. "We realised that it's important already some years ago, and we managed to prepare some very good programs operating in the whole of Poland and really supporting our cinema from this side." UNI NST SSP
