Theft of 104-year-old Ashtadhatu Lord Shani idol solved, idol recovered

New Delhi, May 16 (UNI) The police of PS Kotwali in the North District have solved a sensational theft case at the 104-year-old Shri Shiv Navgrah Temple and arrested a habitual thief along with a receiver. The stolen valuables, including the ancient Ashtadhatu idol of Lord Shani Dev, have been recovered.
According to North DCP Raja Banthia, a complaint was registered on May 12, 2026, by temple priest Mukesh Sharma regarding the theft of the ancient idol of Lord Shani Maharaj and other brass items from the temple located in Chandni Chowk. The theft reportedly took place between 3:00 am and 5:00 am. A case under Section 305 of the BNS was registered at PS Kotwali, and an investigation was launched.
Considering the sensitivity of the matter ahead of Maha Shani Jayanti, a special team was formed under the supervision of ACP Kotwali Shankar Banerjee and led by Inspector Kuldeep Singh. Police scanned footage from over 300 CCTV cameras in and around the area. Based on technical surveillance and local intelligence, the accused, Dilshad alias Banta (45), was arrested near Kalkattia Gate. He reportedly lives on the footpath in the Yamuna Bazaar area and has previously been involved in 15 cases of theft and burglary.
During interrogation, police also arrested receiver Geeta Kumari. The recovered stolen items include the Ashtadhatu idol of Lord Shani Dev, a ceremonial umbrella, mace, plate, and two brass lamp stands. Further investigation is underway.
