Telangana to Mandate EVs in Urban Growth Zone Despite Rs ₹2,000 Cr Revenue Loss: Revanth

Bengaluru/Hyderabad, June 6 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy today said the state government has decided to mandate the use of electric vehicles (EVs) within the Core Urban Region Economy (CURE) zone despite an estimated annual revenue loss of Rs ₹2,000 crore, as part of its long-term vision to build a sustainable economy.
Addressing 'The Hindu Huddle' session titled "By, For, and Of the People: Good Governance for Telangana" in Bengaluru, Revanth Reddy outlined Telangana's roadmap to achieve a $1 trillion USD economy by 2034 and a US$3 trillion economy by 2047.
The Chief Minister said the state has been divided into three economic zones for focused development. The urban region within the 160-km Outer Ring Road (ORR) has been designated as CURE (Core Urban Region Economy), the area between the ORR and the Regional Ring Road (RRR) as PURE (Peri-Urban Region Economy), and the region beyond the RRR as RARE (Rural Agricultural Region Economy).
"We held a global summit on December 7, 8 and 9 last year and unveiled a policy document. We are prioritising the service sector in CURE, manufacturing in PURE and agriculture in RARE," he said.
Revanth Reddy said the government aims to transform CURE into a Net Zero City and is implementing a series of initiatives to achieve that goal.
"Even though we are incurring an annual loss of ₹2,000 crore, we have decided to mandate the use of electric vehicles within the CURE zone and waived taxes on EVs," he said.
The Chief Minister said the government is also expanding the Metro Rail network, restoring lakes by removing encroachments, constructing water-harvesting structures and promoting industrial development within the region.
He said the state is developing Bharat Future City over 30,000 acres and is inviting Fortune 500 companies to establish investments in Telangana.
Referring to infrastructure connectivity, Revanth Reddy said Telangana, being a landlocked state, is working to strengthen its access to ports and logistics corridors.
He said discussions were underway with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to connect Machilipatnam Port with Telangana through a proposed 12-lane highway.
"We are striving to establish seamless connectivity through road, rail, port and airport networks, as these will drive our growth," he said.
Highlighting Telangana's focus on skill development, the Chief Minister said the state has established the Young India Skills University as a public-private partnership initiative, with industrialist Anand Mahindra serving as Chairman and entrepreneur Srini Raju as Vice-Chairman.
Observing that Artificial Intelligence is transforming employment patterns, he said traditional white-collar jobs are increasingly being impacted, making skill-oriented and blue-collar professions more important.
To address this shift, the government has upgraded Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) into Advanced Technology Centres (ATCs) at a cost of ₹2,400 crore.
He said Tata Group is contributing 86 per cent of the investment towards the initiative.
Revanth Reddy said he had visited countries such as Germany, Japan and South Korea to study their workforce models and noted that skilled blue-collar workers in many sectors earn more than software professionals.
"We are providing training in German, Japanese and Korean languages so that our youth can access employment opportunities in those countries," he added.
