Telangana’s Singareni wins top honours in international mine rescue competition in Zambia

Hyderabad, May 6 (UNI) The Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) secured first prize in the Underground Mines Rescue category at the International Mines Rescue Competitions held in Zambia, marking a major international achievement for the coal mining company after nearly two decades.
The competitions were conducted from April 30 to May 5 with participation from rescue teams representing India, China, Colombia, Zambia, Canada, Australia and Poland, the state-owned mining company said in a release here on Wednesday.
Teams from Coal India Limited, SCCL and other Indian companies also participated in the event.
The underground rescue competition evaluated teams in firefighting, rescue operations and technical support.
The Singareni team excelled in all categories to emerge as the top performer.
In a technical test conducted at the Mopani Central Training Centre in Mufulira, SCCL team member Ch. Sai Krishna completed the assigned task of rectifying and refilling a carbon dioxide absorbent canister in 52 minutes against the allotted 90 minutes.
In another major rescue event conducted at the West Portal Mine, the team was tasked with locating and rescuing two persons trapped at a depth of 700 metres underground.
Though two hours were allotted for the operation, the Singareni team completed the rescue mission in just 52 minutes.
The team successfully carried out operations including installation of an L-bend in a pump, shutdown of a substation, locating victims using the mine plan, reviving an unconscious worker found near an LHD machine and safely shifting another injured person to the surface following full rescue procedures.
The entire operation was monitored by an international panel of judges, who appreciated the team’s alertness, discipline and coordination.
Congratulating the team, SCCL Chairman and Managing Director Dr. Buddhaprakash Jyothi described the achievement as a proud moment for the organisation and praised the team for bringing international recognition back to Singareni after two decades.
The rescue team was trained at the Ramagundam Mines Rescue Station under the leadership of General Manager (Rescue) Srinivas Reddy.
The team comprised G. Pramod Kumar, B. Nithin Kumar, N. Bhanu Prasad, A. Shyam Kumar, R. Srikanth, Ch. Sai Krishna and translator G. Rajender Reddy.
