TB researchers gather in Hyderabad for EMBO workshop

Hyderabad, Feb 9 (UNI) Over 200 Tuberculosis (TB) researchers from India and abroad have assembled at the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad on Sunday for the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) workshop on Host and Pathogen Heterogeneity in Tuberculosis.
The four-day event, running until February 12, brings together around 170 research scholars and postdoctoral fellows to share their findings and gain insights from leading experts in the field. The workshop focuses on the complexities involved in understanding and combating the TB-causing Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections.
The keynote lecture was delivered by Dr Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. He highlighted how the bacteria not only infect lung cells but also find refuge in other cells, such as those in the liver. He presented research from his team demonstrating how liver cells provide a protective environment for the bacteria, shielding them from antibiotic drugs. He linked these findings to the Indian Government’s mission of TB eradication.
