London, July 8 (UNI) World No.1 Iga Swiatek eased into the quarterfinals of Wimbledon today with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Denmark’s Clara Tauson, continuing her quietly effective run at The Championships and edging closer to her maiden title of the 2025 season.
Despite having topped the WTA rankings for 125 weeks — the seventh-longest reign in tour history — Swiatek has surprisingly gone without a title so far this year. But on the lawns of SW19, the five-time Grand Slam champion may be peaking at just the right moment.
Facing an ailing Tauson, who later revealed she had been sick overnight, Swiatek shook off a nervy start and two early breaks to dominate the second set on No.1 Court.
Swiatek's adaptability and poise have been evident throughout the tournament. Not typically known as a grass-court natural, the 24-year-old is quietly leading the tournament in service games won, boasting a remarkable 90 per cent success rate.
Tauson, a dangerous shot-maker, threatened early but faded as the match progressed. Swiatek, a former Wimbledon girls’ singles champion in 2018, swiftly seized control in the second set to wrap up the win in just 78 minutes.
Having dropped just one set en route to the quarterfinals, with wins over Polina Kudermetova, Caty McNally, Danielle Collins and Tauson, Swiatek will next face Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova. The Pole holds a 4-0 record against her upcoming opponent but noted, "She’s a really solid player – from both sides. We’ve played many matches, even some three-setters."
Though Swiatek has dominated their past meetings, this will be their first encounter on grass. "I know she can play well on fast surfaces. I’ll prepare tactically... I haven’t watched any matches so I’ll trust my coach," she added.
With her serve firing and movement sharp, Swiatek returns to the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time since 2023, and may finally be poised to lift her first title of the season — and her first at the All England Club.
