Patna, Jun 2 (UNI) Former Bihar deputy chief minister and BJP member of Rajya Sabha Sushil Kumar Modi on Wednesday took potshots at the Congress and RJD for demanding extension of tenure of Panchayat representatives, saying they had no knowledge of constitutional provisions, which gives them fixed tenure of five years only.
Mr Modi said that Congress and RJD were not interested in conducting Panchayat elections for a period of 23 years when both the parties were in power. After a long wait of more than two decades, Panchayat elections were held in Bihar in the year 2001, which was an exercise over-shadowed with bloodshed, he remarked.
"Those demanding for extension of tenure of Panchayat representatives have no knowledge of constitutional provision which gives them only 5 years which can not be extended at all" the BJP leader said adding it was a situation like tenures of MPs and MLAs which could not be extended beyond 5 years.
