Stock markets end on strong note, Sensex up 900 points

New Delhi, Jul 17 (UNI) The Indian stock markets on Friday ended on a strong note. Indices were supported by robust buying in auto, information technology and banking stocks.
At close, the Sensex was up 964.58 points or 1.25 percent at 78,151.45, and the Nifty was up 261.55 points or 1.09 percent at 24,334.30. For the week, BSE Sensex added 0.5pc and Nifty rose 0.7pc.
Among the sectors, Nifty Private Bank emerging as the top gainer rising 2 percent. It was followed by Nifty Bank, which advanced 1.6 percent, Nifty IT by 1.7 percent. Nifty Auto and Nifty Realty also rose 1.3 percent each, Nifty Oil & Gas gained 1 percent and Nifty FMCG added 0.7 percent.
On the other hand, Nifty Pharma lost 1.4 percent and Metal down 0.4 percent.
Nearly 100 stocks touched their 52-week high on the BSE. These included Federal Bank, Sona BLW, Exide Industries, Himadri Speciality, Adani Energy, Ipca Labs, Oracle Fin Services, Gujarat Fluorochemicals, Piramal Finance, BHEL, among others.
Indian rupee snapped four-day losing streak and ended higher by 7 paise at 96.28 against the US dollar.
On Nifty, nearly 37 stocks ended higher. These included Reliance, Jio Financial Services, Tech Mahindra, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and HDFC Bank as the top gainers. While on the flip side were Hindalco Industries, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and Wipro ended as the top laggards in the index.
Federal Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank led the gains by rising 2pc each.
The rally came in the IT stocks amid the ongoing June quarter earnings season. These included Infosys, Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies rising more than 3pc each. They were followed by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Persistent Systems, Mphasis and LTIMindtree. UNI VK SAS
