Statewide earthquake Mock Drill to test Mizoram’s disaster preparedness on Jan 15

Aizawl, Jan 14(UNI): With Mizoram and the entire Northeast located in one of the country’s most earthquake-prone regions, the state government has announced a comprehensive, state-level earthquake mock drill to be conducted on January 15 to assess preparedness, coordination and public response in the event of a major seismic disaster.
In an official statement, the government noted that Mizoram and the Northeast fall under “a highly vulnerable seismic zone”, adding that the latest seismic zonation issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has placed the entire region in an even higher risk category, underscoring the possibility of severe and destructive earthquakes. The statement recalled that the Northeast has witnessed massive earthquakes in the past, while Mizoram itself has experienced repeated mild tremors, particularly in the eastern parts of the state, which recorded frequent seismic activity in 2020.
“In such a situation, preparedness is not the responsibility of the government alone. Individuals, families and society as a whole must be ready to respond to a major earthquake,” the government said, stressing that advance planning and awareness have become “the need of the hour”.
