Suchika makes history with India's first Asian Games MMA medal

Nagoya, Sept 21 (UNI) India's Suchika Tariyal fought her way into the history books at the Asian Games on Monday, securing the country's first-ever medal in mixed martial arts despite a semi-final defeat to Singapore's Hui Hoon Teo in the women's traditional 60kg category.

Suchika went down 0-2 to Teo in the semi-final, ending her hopes of reaching the gold-medal contest but confirming a historic bronze for India in a sport making its Asian Games debut at Aichi-Nagoya. The defeat was particularly painful for the 36-year-old Indian, who had fought her way back into contention during the bout. Suchika responded strongly after falling behind, but Teo eventually prevailed to book her place in the final.

The result left Suchika visibly disappointed, but could not take away the significance of what she had already achieved - becoming India's first Asian Games medallist in MMA. Suchika had entered the semi-finals after defeating Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa 2-0 in the quarter-finals. That victory had assured India of at least a bronze and taken Suchika into the last four of the inaugural Asian Games MMA competition.

MMA is making its debut at the Asian Games at Aichi-Nagoya, making Suchika's medal the first in the discipline for India at the continental multi-sport event. For Suchika, the achievement is the latest chapter in a long and unconventional combat-sports career. The 36-year-old has competed across disciplines including judo, kurash, jiu-jitsu and MMA. She represented India in judo at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and competed in kurash at the 2023 Asian Games.

Her journey in combat sports began at a young age, with judo eventually becoming the foundation of a career that took her to national and international competitions before she moved further into MMA. Her path to the Asian Games podium has therefore been less a straight line than a long combat-sports journey across disciplines.

At Aichi-Nagoya, however, she has added a unique distinction to that career. She may have missed the final, but when MMA made its Asian Games debut, it was Suchika Tariyal who put India on the medal table. For Indian combat sports, the bronze is more than another medal in the tally - it is the country's first Asian Games chapter in MMA, written by a 36-year-old fighter who refused to let a long and winding journey end without a place in history.
