Split Liver Transplant by deceased organ donor at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital Saves Two Lives

Pune, Mar 15 (UNI) In a remarkable display of medical excellence and compassion, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital (DMH) recently performed a split liver transplant in Pune, giving a new lease of life to two patients from a single donor.
A 6-year-old girl received a portion of the donated liver, while the remaining segment was transplanted into a 58-year-old male adult patient at DMH. Both recipients are recovering well under close medical supervision, a release from the hospital stated.
Split liver transplantation is a highly advanced surgical procedure in which a deceased donor’s liver is meticulously divided into two functional grafts—typically benefiting a child and an adult. The liver’s extraordinary ability to regenerate enables both recipients to regain full liver function over time. This complex surgery demands exceptional surgical precision, advanced imaging, state-of-the-art operation theatres, and seamless coordination among transplant surgeons, anaesthetists, critical care specialists, and nursing teams.
