New Delhi, May 30 (UNI) A southwest monsoon hit Kerala's coast on Thursday after India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast of an early arrival of rains in the southern state.
'Southwest Monsoon has set over Kerala and advanced into most parts of northeast India today, May 30, 2024,'IMD said on Thursday.
The monsoon hit Kerala's coasts a day earlier than forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department.
The weather agency had announced the onset of a monsoon over Kerala by May 31.
On Wednesday, IMD announced that conditions are rapidly becoming favorable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala within the next 24 hours, indicating a potential deviation from the initially anticipated onset date of May 31.
Meanwhile, Kerala has experienced heavy rains, resulting in surplus May rainfall.
The accelerated onset a day ahead was attributed to Cyclone Remal, which struck West Bengal and Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, the normal monsoon onset date for Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Manipur, and Assam is June 5.
