Vijayawada, June 3 (UNI) Former DGP Dr. J. Purnachandra Rao asserted that genuine democracy can thrive only when political representation reflects the social composition of society.
Addressing the "Bahujana Paata Mata" programme held here on Wednesday, Dr. Purnachandra Rao expressed concern over what he described as a serious mismatch between population strength and political representation in Andhra Pradesh.
Referring to the composition of the AP Legislative Assembly elected in 2024, he pointed out that BCs constitute about 56% of the state's population but have only 40 MLAs, while the SCs, who account for nearly 19% of the population, have 29 MLAs. Muslims, constituting about 8% of the population, have only 3 MLAs, while the STs, who form around 6% of the population, have 7 MLAs.
