South Korea mulling to restructure Counterintelligence Command after Martial Law scandal

Seoul, June 10 (UNI) South Korea is moving to dismantle and restructure its long-standing military counterintelligence body following allegations that it got embroiled in the controversial 2024 martial law attempt linked to former President Yoon Suk-yeol, the Yonhap news agency reported on Wednesday, citing the ministry.
The Defense Counterintelligence Command's core functions will be distributed among new and existing organizations, Yonhap said.
The South Korean Defense Ministry announced it will disband the 49-year-old Defense Counterintelligence Command and redistribute its core functions across newly created and existing agencies. The overhaul is part of a broader effort to reform military intelligence and strengthen democratic oversight after what officials described as a serious abuse of authority.
