Snatching incidents during Punjab polls raise questions on law and order

Chandigarh, Dec 6 (UNI) Widespread disruptions during the Block Committee nomination process across Punjab have intensified concerns over the state’s law-and-order situation. Several incidents of snatching and tearing of nomination papers were reported from multiple districts, prompting criticism of the police and the administration under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Patiala emerged as the epicentre of these disturbances, with six FIRs registered in separate incidents of intimidation and document destruction. Despite the availability of videos and photos, the police have identified only two accused so far, leading opposition parties to question the effectiveness of the investigation. In one of the most widely circulated cases from Ghanaur, a woman’s nomination papers were forcibly taken as she walked towards the filing centre. The footage went viral, yet the suspect remains untraced.
Similar complaints surfaced from Julkan, Nabha, Tripuri and Samana, where masked individuals or unidentified youths allegedly targeted candidates, snatched their documents or tore them before fleeing. Witnesses in several locations claimed that candidates were obstructed outside official premises, further fuelling doubts regarding the impartiality of the process.
