Six arrested in Tripura lynching case

Agartala, Feb 11 (UNI) Based on the complaint of the victim's family, police arrested six persons so far in connection with lynching a 35-year-old man at a construction site for his alleged involvement in a theft case in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in South Tripura’s Belonia on Monday wee hours.
SP (South Tripura) Ashok Sinha said, “Three of the arrested persons are Navodaya employees, and others are construction labourers from outside the state. All were booked for murdering in a group under sections 103(1) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and have been forwarded to court seeking their remand.”
Allegedly, the victim Babul Mia, a resident of Muzaffar Colony next to the Navodaya Vidyalaya, was detained when he climbed the school’s boundary wall to snatch the valuable construction materials. Upon being caught, the accused persons allegedly beat him badly and tied him up in a tree for the whole night.
On Sunday morning, getting a call from the villagers, police from Belonia reached the spot and rescued Babul in an unconscious state. When he was taken to Belonia Hospital, doctors declared him dead. The news spread like wildfire, and family members and relatives, along with the neighbours, stormed the police station seeking action against the accused.
“Primafacie of the incident proved that Babul was lynched to death in the school campus, but police didn’t register the case under the appropriate section of lynching; instead, they attempted to save the criminals who killed Babul on false charges,” alleged the younger brother of the deceased, adding that the accused persons have tied him and tortured him for the whole night to ensure his death.
