Sikkim's Tribeny Rai’s ‘Shape of Momo’ wins 2 awards at Busan film fest

New Delhi, Oct 6 (UNI) Sikkim-based filmmaker Tribeny Rai has made a remarkable international debut with her first feature film 'Shape of Momo', which has taken home two major honours at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival.
The Nepali-language film won both the Taipei Film Commission Award and the Songwon Vision Award — significant recognitions at one of Asia’s top film festivals.
Celebrating the achievement, the film’s team shared on Instagram, “We are over the moon to inform you that our film 'Shape of Momo' has won two awards at Busan film fest. We just want to take this opportunity to thank the entire cast and crew for bringing this story to life. Certainly, awards add credibility, but with or without them, we would still be the same bunch of filmmakers, searching and persevering.”
Shape of Momo had its world premiere at Busan in September and quickly stood out for its quiet emotional depth and original storytelling.
Set in the Himalayan landscape, the film follows Bishnu, a young woman who returns to her mountain village after leaving her job in the city.
But home isn’t as simple as she remembered — it becomes a space of conflict between family expectations, her pregnant sister’s presence, and a budding connection with a village boy.
The story captures Bishnu’s inner turmoil as she navigates the tension between tradition and her desire for freedom.
In an interview with Variety, Rai shared that she deliberately avoided using the mountains as just a “picturesque” setting.
“People always want to romanticize places like ours. I’ve never liked that,” she said. Instead, she chose to focus on the intimate, everyday realities of life in her homeland. The film also carries personal significance for the director.
Reflecting on the theme of displacement, Rai said, “We leave the places that shaped us in search of opportunity, freedom, and a better life, only to find ourselves belonging nowhere. I am still caught in that in-between space, unable to decide whether to stay in my village or surrender to the city.”
Shape of Momo is produced by Geeta Rai and Kislay, with co-producers Neha Malik, Himanshu Kohli, and Jung Woo Lee.
Together, the team has brought a heartfelt story from the hills of Sikkim to a global platform, marking a promising beginning for a fresh voice in South Asian cinema.
