Siddaramaiah to press Prez Murmu for nod on Muslim Quota Bill

Raichur, Jun 23 (UNI) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is set to meet President Droupadi Murmu in the national capital on Tuesday to push for presidential assent to five bills passed by the state legislature, including the controversial proposal to provide 4 percent reservation for Muslims in civil contracts.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Siddaramaiah confirmed, "The President has given me time tomorrow. I will discuss the pending bills." Among the pending proposals, the Muslim quota in government contracts has attracted strong political backlash, particularly from the BJP, which argues that the reservation violates constitutional principles.
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot had earlier forwarded the bill for Presidential consideration, despite BJP’s opposition and a petition urging rejection. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also criticised the move, stating that the Indian Constitution does not permit religion-based reservations.
