Nagpur, June 6 (UNI) Nagpur Police have served a show-cause notice to an investigation officer attached to Ambazari Police Station for allegedly failing to include the suicide note of an 18-year-old NEET aspirant in the official case papers, a senior police official said on Saturday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2), Nityanand Jha, said the handwritten suicide note, purportedly written by the deceased student, was recorded in the station diary but was not attached to the case file.
The notice has been issued to Investigation Officer Nikhil Tabhane seeking an explanation for the lapse, the DCP said.
Police officials stated that the note was neither cited in documents related to the investigation nor brought to the notice of senior officers at the relevant time.
Following revelations surrounding the omission, senior officials launched an internal inquiry to ascertain responsibility. A report has since been submitted to the DCP for further action.
The deceased, Akanksha Chaturvedi (18), allegedly died by suicide at her residence in Nagpur on May 20, days after appearing for the NEET-UG examination conducted on May 3.
Originally from Madhya Pradesh, Akanksha was reportedly under stress amid uncertainty surrounding the medical entrance exam after allegations of a paper leak triggered cancellation of the examination and plans for a retest.
Police said the suicide note surfaced several days after her death when family members were sorting through her books and study materials. It was subsequently handed over to Ambazari Police on June 1.
In the note, the teenager allegedly expressed anxiety over appearing for the re-examination and apologised to her parents, stating that she had failed to meet their expectations.
Her father, Krishna Kumar Chaturvedi, who works as a cook in Nagpur and is also engaged in farming in Madhya Pradesh, had earlier informed police that his daughter was confident of scoring over 650 marks in the original examination.
However, according to family members, her behaviour changed significantly after reports emerged about the alleged paper leak and rescheduling of the examination.
Police said statements of the victim’s family members have been recorded and further investigation is in progress.
