SC quashes corruption FIR against Karnataka LOP Ashoka over lack of sanction, terms case politically motivated

New Delhi, Dec 16, (UNI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday quashed the corruption case registered against Karnataka Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA R. Ashoka in connection with alleged irregularities in land allotments during his tenure as Chairman of the Committee for Regularisation of Unauthorised Occupation.
Allowing the appeal and setting aside the High Court’s decision, a Bench comprising Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Vipul M. Pancholi held that the very initiation of proceedings against the appellant, a public servant, was vitiated for want of mandatory sanction from the State Government.
The case arose from an FIR lodged by the State Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), alleging illegal allotment of government land purportedly meant for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and economically weaker sections to Ashoka’s family members, political supporters and corporators during his tenure as committee chairman.
