SC dismisses PIL seeking CBI probe into alleged honey-trap

New Delhi, Mar 26 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a court-monitored investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the alleged honey-trapping of Karnataka legislators, political leaders, and judges.
A bench, headed by Justice Vikram Nath, comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Sandeep Mehta, rejected the plea filed by Binay Kumar Singh, which urged the Apex Court or a committee headed by a retired Supreme Court judge to oversee the probe.
The petition cited recent remarks by Karnataka’s Cooperation Minister K N Rajanna, who claimed on March 20 that nearly 47 high-profile individuals, including politicians, had been targeted by honey-trap attempts.
The petitioner contended that such incidents could compromise judicial independence and expose judges to undue influence, undermining their ability to discharge duties impartially.
"A judiciary tainted by external influence ceases to be a check on executive and legislative overreach. If judges are susceptible to blackmail, the courts may no longer serve as the bulwark against authoritarianism, corruption, or corporate greed," the plea stated.
The bench, however, found no merit in the petition and dismissed it outright.
