Savouring IPL from dog's eye view

Savouring IPL from dog's eye view

By BD Narayankar
Bengaluru, Apr 18 (UNI) In 2025, the IPL has introduced a new star that isn’t a batsman or bowler, but a four-legged, AI-powered robotic camera dog.
Merging technology and entertainment in ways no one expected, the robo-dog is rapidly becoming the season's ultimate crowd favourite.
The lovable mechanical canine is now making waves at Chinnaswamy Stadium, ahead of the highly anticipated IPL match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings. It’s the perfect setting for this innovative addition to the broadcast team, capturing the excitement and energy of one of IPL’s most iconic venues.
The robo-dog achieved star status during a recent match between Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings, when MS Dhoni, known for his love of dogs, had an endearing interaction with it. In a moment that melted hearts, Dhoni gently lifted the robot off the ground, set it down sideways, and carried it off for some extra playtime, much to the delight of the spectators. The footage quickly went viral, symbolising the IPL’s unique ability to blend sport with human connection.
Beyond its charm, the robo-dog is a marvel of modern technology. It’s equipped with a stabilised camera and advanced AI that allows it to move autonomously along the sidelines, offering fans a "dog’s-eye" view of the game. The robot's dynamic, on-the-ground visuals deliver unique angles that traditional cameras can’t match, creating a more immersive viewing experience.
The IPL has invited fans to name the robot, with suggestions flooding in, and one fan even proposed "Dhoni's new teammate." This playful, interactive element has endeared the robo-dog to both players and fans.
Rooted in the design of Boston Dynamics’ quadrupedal robots, the IPL’s version is a lighter, more entertaining adaptation, perfect for the league’s vibrant, tech-savvy fanbase. Whether it’s delivering unique broadcast perspectives, becoming an internet sensation through playful interactions with players, or simply being part of the spectacle, the robo-dog has cemented its place in the IPL ecosystem.
As the IPL continues to innovate, this robotic companion proves that technology doesn’t just belong on the field, it can be a fun and an exciting part of the action.
