Sajjan Kumar acquittal reopens debate on accountability for 1984 violence in Delhi

Chandigarh, Jan 22 (UNI) Reacting strongly to a Delhi court's decision to acquit former Congress Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar in the Janakpuri-Vikaspuri case linked to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, senior Sikh leader Giani Harpreet Singh said the verdict was like "sprinkling salt on the deep wounds of the Sikh community" and reflected what he described as unequal justice for minorities. The court's ruling on Thursday has once again brought the decades-old issue of accountability for the 1984 violence into sharp public focus.
Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh pronounced the acquittal through a brief oral order, stating that a detailed judgment would be issued later. The case concerned allegations that Kumar had instigated communal violence in parts of west Delhi in November 1984, following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The prosecution's case was based on two FIRs registered by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in February 2015. One FIR related to the killing of Sohan Singh and his son-in-law Avtar Singh in Janakpuri on November 1, 1984, while the second pertained to the death of Gurcharan Singh, who was allegedly set ablaze in Vikaspuri on November 2, 1984.
