RSP’s New Plate Mill registers significant operational milestones

Bhubaneswar, Apr 23 (UNI) The New Plate Mill (NPM) of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) demonstrated remarkable operational excellence in the financial year 2024–25, achieving several key milestones.
According to RSP sources, in line with Government of India guidelines, the mill successfully implemented branding of its plates by affixing 'Made in India' stickers—underscoring the nation’s emphasis on indigenous manufacturing.
In a major technical upgrade, the exit onboard descaling system was modified during the rolling of EME segment plates. This led to an increase in descaling time from 4.5 seconds to 6.5 seconds, while maintaining the same flow rate. The improvement aims to reduce red scale formation and ensure better surface quality of the plates.
The mill set a new benchmark by rolling 18,098 tonnes of 8–10 mm thick plates—the highest in any financial year—surpassing the previous year’s figure of 9,706 tonnes.
Another notable achievement was the successful rolling and dispatch of API X-70M PSL-2 grade steel plates, marking a significant comeback after a gap of four years. This highlights the mill's enhanced capability to meet stringent specifications for specialized applications.
NPM also made significant strides in energy efficiency, achieving its best-ever consumption figures: 306 Kcal/T of slabs in Specific Heat Consumption, 124 kWh/T of plates in Specific Power Consumption, and 0.66 Gcal/T of plates in Specific Energy Consumption.
Two major technological interventions were commissioned and made operational during FY 2024–25—a Forced Cooling System and a New Marking Machine—further enhancing process control and product marking capabilities.
Continuing its momentum, the New Plate Mill set a new slab rolling record of 1,809 tonnes in a single shift on April 22, 2025, surpassing the previous record of 1,792 tonnes achieved on July 30, 2023.
