Rock icon Billy Idol says he deserves his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

London, Apr 23 (UNI) English rock icon Billy Idol says that his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is well deserved, because he is "f***** awesome".
One of the 14 artists waiting on the list of induction in the rock museum’s catalogue, Idol’s nomination comes alongside other high-profile artists such as Oasis, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, and Black Crowes among others.
The 69-year-old, who is well known for his role in the punk rock scene as part of Generation X, and for his eclectic solo career with albums such as ‘Rebell Yells’, felt that his induction was well deserved.
In an interview with the Independent, Idol said “It’s pretty amazing that I went from something like punk rock in England to mainstream success in the States. I was not only involved in punk, I became a big part of the ’80s New Wave. And then I carried on making the music, living the rock’n’roll life.
“I’ve also gone beyond what people expect, with things like cyberpunk,” he adds, referencing his 1993 album of that name. “I didn’t stay in my lane. I took chances. Even coming to America, I had no idea I was going to do really well. And the risks I took worked. All of that shows an enterprising spirit – a spirit of rock’n’roll.”
Artists become eligible for nomination in the Hall of Fame, 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording. The shortlist of nominees will be revealed at the end of this month. Other artists on the long-list include Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Mariah Carey, OutKast, Cindy Lauper and Phish.
While being inducted into the massive rock museum is considered a very high honour, the institution has received a lot of backlash in the years by fans and artists alike. Many music icons such as Iron Maiden, Sex Pistols, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Velvet Revolver, Elton John, Oasis, have all dismissed the rock museum, calling it a corporate sponsored institution, run by people who are neither musicians nor listeners, making the whole museum a bad joke.
Idol is currently set to release his ninth studio album, ‘Dream Into It’, making it the Generation X singer’s first album in over a decade. The LP is set to release on April 25 via Dark Horse Records and features guest appearances by Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, and Alison Mosshart.
