Richa, de Klerk shatter lower-order records

Visakhapatnam, Oct 09 (UNI) If ever there was a game that showed the guts and glory of modern women’s cricket, this was it. India’s Richa Ghosh and South Africa’s Nadine de Klerk turned what looked like a routine World Cup group clash into an unforgettable contest here today, producing innings that would have made even the great lower-order battlers of the past proud.
Richa’s 94 was pure defiance — counterattack wrapped in courage. She walked in with India tottering and, instead of shutting shop, played with the flair of a top-order batswoman and the heart of a streetfighter. But as good as her knock was, de Klerk’s unbeaten 84* was the difference between hope and history. Chasing 252 in a World Cup match — that takes nerve. De Klerk not only soaked up the pressure but batted with a calm authority, finishing it off with the swagger of someone who knew she belonged on the big stage.
It was South Africa’s first win over India after five straight defeats in ODIs, and their third consecutive World Cup victory against India. That tells you something about belief — and about how far this South African side has come.
