Re Sustainability, Indian Oil Partner to Build India’s First Used Oil Circular Economy Ecosystem

Hyderabad, Mar 13 (UNI) Re Sustainability Limited(ReSL), India's largest and Asia's leading provider of comprehensive environment management services., on Friday said it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Oil Corporation Limited to establish India's first integrated used oil circular economy ecosystem.
The MoU targets annual collection of up to 100 kilotonnes (KTA) of used lubricating oil through a nationwide network of aggregation, logistics and traceability systems.
The partners also plan to set up a state-of-the-art re-refining facility at a mutually agreed location with a processing capacity of 50–100 KTA, expected to be commissioned within the next three years.
The facility will produce Group II RRBO meeting Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and international specifications.
The collaboration aims to create a circular ecosystem for lubricant oil management by enabling systematic recovery and re-refining of used lubricants, helping reduce reliance on virgin crude-derived base oils and conserve natural resources, the Hyderabad based company said in a release here..
As part of the partnership, the companies plan to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to develop a nationwide reverse logistics and collection network for used lubricating oil from industrial and automotive sectors.
The initiative will also focus on building advanced refining infrastructure to produce Re-Refined Base Oil (RRBO), including Group I and Group II base oils, from recovered lubricants.
Bankim Patra, Country Head (Lubes) at Indian Oil, said the collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to strengthening energy security and environmental responsibility through sustainable value chains for lubricant recovery and reuse.
Recovered oil under the initiative will be processed into RRBO and reintroduced into lubricant manufacturing value chains, reducing dependence on crude-derived base oils while improving material efficiency across the sector.
Commenting on the partnership, Masood Mallick, Managing Director and Group CEO of Re Sustainability, said the initiative represents a major step toward institutionalising structured oil recycling in India and advancing the country’s transition to a circular economy.
The initiative will additionally include the recovery and recycling of plastic lubricant containers in line with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements under India’s environmental regulations.
India currently generates around 1.3 million tonnes of used lubricating oil annually, of which only about 0.2 million tonnes is recovered through formal recycling channels.
The partnership aims to significantly expand formal recovery infrastructure and unlock the resource value of used lubricants while supporting a more sustainable and resource-efficient lubricant economy.
