Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ hits silver screens worldwide amid fan celebrations

Hyderabad, Aug 14 (UNI) Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest movie ‘Coolie’ hit the silver screens across the country today, a day before India’s Independence Day, amid fan celebrations.
The film, which also released globally, clashed with the Hindi film War 2,coinciding with Rajinikanth completing 50 years in cinema.
Later, the makers added a 25-second graphic card to the final cut, paying homage to Rajinikanth’s golden jubilee in the industry, and resubmitted it to the CBFC.
Ardent fans thronged cinema halls and multiplexes early to catch the first day's show of the action thriller film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures.
Fans celebrated outside theaters at various places in both the Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to mark the release of the highly anticipated, star-studded movie, which stars top Indian actors Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, Upendra, Sruti Haasan, Sathyaraj.
In the film, a former coolie union leader stands up against a corrupt syndicate that exploits and abuses the coolies in a port town.
Apart from the original Tamil language, the film was also released with dubbed versions in the Telugu, Hindi and Kannada languages.
The film was officially announced in September 2023 under the tentative title Thalaivar 171 as Rajinikanth's 171st film as a lead actor and the official title was announced in April 2024 and wrapped by mid-March 2025.
The film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Girish Gangadharan and editing by Philomin Raj.
The Hindi version of Coolie was initially titled Majadoor (transl. Worker); journalists believed it was to avoid confusion with the 1983 Hindi film Coolie, and other identically titled films. However, the title received criticism from fans and netizens, leading to the Hindi version being retitled Coolie: The Powerhouse.
In India, Asian Multiplexes Private Limited bought the distribution rights for the Telugu states for Rs 53 cr (US Dollar 6.3 million) while AV Media Consultancy acquired the rights for Karnataka, Pen Marudhar for North India and Haasan Meenu Associates for Kerala.
Hamsini Entertainment bought the overseas distribution rights, reportedly for Rs 68 cr (US Dollar 8.0 million) and are reportedly intending to release the film across 100 countries.
The post-theatrical streaming rights of Coolie were reportedly acquired by Amazon Prime Video for Rs 110 cr (US Dollar 13 million), while Sun TV Network acquired the film's satellite rights.
In India, Coolie will be released alongside War 2, which is expected to impact the box office performance of both films domestically.
Film exhibitors have predicted that the combined release could result in one of the highest-grossing opening weekends in Indian cinema.
