Radio host James Whale dies after extended fight with cancer

New Delhi, Aug 5 (UNI) James Whale, the pioneering radio broadcaster and television presenter frequently referred to as Britain's first "shock jock," died at age 74 after an extended struggle with stage‑four kidney cancer.
TalkTV, James Whale's employers, shared a heartfelt statement on social media: "We're deeply saddened to announce the passing of James Whale MBE, aged 74, after a long battle with cancer. As a broadcasting legend with over 50 years of experience, James will be greatly missed by his colleagues at TalkTV and the wider News UK family."
His wife, Nadine Lamont-Brown, also confirmed the news, saying: "James passed away gently this morning, with a beautiful and peaceful passing, and a smile on his face."
Whale started his broadcast career early in the 1970s at Metro Radio before coming into national fame through his late-night programme Nightowls. He became a household name through The James Whale Radio Show on ITV during the 1980s and went on to present programmes on Sky, BBC, TalkSPORT, and TalkTV. Acclaimed for his dry wit and uncompromising interviews, Whale was both influential and controversial.
A colleague and friend from TalkTv Mike Graham posted on his X stating, “What a remarkable man. What an extraordinary talent. What an incredible voice. The world is a lesser place today…RIP James.”
TalkTV's official X account described Whale as "a broadcasting legend for over 50 years", who would "be missed by so many" at the network.
Diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2000, Whale was successfully treated before the illness recurred in 2020 now involving his spine, brain, and lungs. Undeterred by the bleak diagnosis, he continued hosting his chat shows and campaigning for greater awareness via the charity he established, now renamed Kidney Cancer UK. In 2024, he was awarded an MBE for services to broadcasting and charity.
Over the past few weeks, Whale made public his decision to discontinue treatment and was in the last stages of his disease.
The news comes just days after Whale recorded his final ever podcast from a hospice with his wife, as he thanked fans for listening. He said a farewell in an emotional clip shared on TalkTV on Friday (August 1). He told his audience: “Thank you for being a listener. I hope it helps in some way and who knows what’s next, so I can only say au revoir.”
Whale leaves behind his wife Nadine, two sons from his previous marriage James and Peter and his brothers.
