New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi today expressed grief over the demise of eminent Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, describing him as a lifelong custodian of Indian art and culture.
A doyen of the Banaras Gharana, Pandit Mishra was widely regarded for his evocative renditions steeped in the musical traditions of Kashi. Over the decades, he played a pivotal role in mentoring young artistes, nurturing the city’s rich cultural legacy, and transforming his Varanasi residence into a centre of musical learning and devotion.
Recalling his personal association with the maestro, the Prime Minister referred to the “privilege” of having received Pandit Ji’s blessings and support, particularly during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when the vocalist served as his proposer for the Varanasi constituency. The gesture, Modi said, symbolised Pandit Ji’s deep-rooted bond with the city and its evolving artistic identity.
“Pandit Ji was a towering figure in the world of classical music, whose commitment to the preservation and propagation of Indian traditions has left an indelible mark. His music was not just a performance, but a spiritual experience that resonated with audiences across generations,” the Prime Minister said.
Taking to the social media platform X, Modi paid tribute in Hindi, stating, "I am deeply saddened by the demise of the eminent classical vocalist Pandit Chhannulal Mishra Ji. In this hour of grief, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family members and admirers. Om Shanti."
The Prime Minister added that Pandit Ji’s legacy would continue to inspire generations of musicians, cultural enthusiasts, and seekers of India’s spiritual and artistic traditions.
In 2020, Pandit Mishra was conferred the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honour, in recognition of his distinguished contribution to Indian classical music.
