Polls will be a defining moment for Bangladesh's democratic future: BNP leader

Dhaka, Jan 20 (UNI) Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the coming polls will mark a defining moment for the country's political history, remarking that the outcome would determine if Bangladesh will continue to exist as a secular, pluralist, and liberal democracy, or descend into radical religious extremism.
Speaking at a discussion marking the 90th birth anniversary of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman, Fakhrul said the vote was not merely an ordinary electoral contest, but rather a "tough test" determining the course of the nation's future.
"This election will determine whether this country will be in the hands of liberal democracy, or whether it will fall into the hands of extremist, anti-state elements," he told the gathering at the Institution of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh auditorium in Dhaka's Kakrail area.
