New Delhi, Jun 9 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid rich tributes to tribal freedom fighter and icon Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his martyrdom day, recalling his courageous struggle against British colonial rule and his lifelong commitment to protecting the rights, culture and identity of India's tribal communities.
In a post on X, Modi described Birsa Munda as a symbol of resistance and sacrifice whose legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians. “On the martyrdom day of Dharti Aaba, Bhagwan Birsa Munda, I pay my heartfelt tributes to him. He fought with indomitable courage against foreign rule to protect water, forests, and land. His entire life was dedicated to safeguarding the dignity, culture, and rights of the tribal community,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting the enduring relevance of Birsa Munda's ideals, Modi added, “His saga of sacrificing everything for the motherland will continue to inspire patriotism in every generation of the nation.”
Birsa Munda, revered as “Dharti Aaba,” is one of the most celebrated tribal leaders in India's freedom struggle. Born on November 15, 1875, in present-day Jharkhand, he led a powerful movement against British rule and exploitative practices that affected tribal communities. His leadership of the Ulgulan, or “The Great Tumult,” in the late 19th century sought to protect tribal land rights and challenge colonial policies.
Munda was arrested by the British and died in custody at Ranchi Jail on June 9, 1900, at the age of just 25. Despite his short life, he emerged as a lasting symbol of tribal pride, social reform and resistance against oppression.
The Narendra Modi government has repeatedly highlighted Birsa Munda's contribution to the freedom movement and tribal welfare. In 2021, the Centre declared November 15, Birsa Munda's birth anniversary, as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas (Tribal Pride Day) to commemorate the contributions of tribal communities and freedom fighters to the nation-building process.
Leaders across the political spectrum and tribal organisations also paid homage to Birsa Munda on the occasion, remembering his role in defending the rights of indigenous communities and his contribution to India's struggle against colonial rule.
