PETA says Maharashtra lacks facilities to treat Mahadevi elephant

Kolhapur, Aug 8 (UNI) Amidst talk of returning elephant Mahadevi to the Nandani Jain Math, PETA-India has claimed that there is no well-equipped center in Maharashtra to provide medical service to Mahadevi.
In its statement circulated here to media persons, PETA said "Madhuri alias Mahadevi elephant has long required specialized veterinary care and companionship with other elephants. We fully support the decision of the high court and Supreme Court to ensure that Mahadevi receives high-quality veterinary treatment, freedom from chains and opportunities for rehabilitation. Mahadevi suffers from severe grade four arthritis, foot rot and symptoms of stress."
The statement further said: "Madhuri alias Mahadevi needs a quiet place where she can move freely, a source of water to soothe her aching legs and provide gentle exercise, advanced veterinary equipment and expert doctors to address her many health problems." It said that all these facilities are available in Gujarat's Vantara sanctuary where Mahadevi has currently been located, but there is no such center in Maharashtra.
