Pentagon taps US automakers as arms supplies strained

Washington, Apr 16 (UNI) It seems that the ongoing war has strained US weapons stockpiles, with concerns emerging over the pace at which defence contractors like Lockheed Martin can replenish supplies. Reports have also suggested that the Pentagon has approached American automakers to step in and support weapons manufacturing.
According to a The Wall Street Journal report, officials from the Pentagon have held preliminary discussions with companies including General Motors and Ford Motor Company, as well as other industrial firms, to assess whether their production capabilities could be leveraged to boost output of military equipment.
The discussions, according to the report, began even before February 28, when the U.S. and Israel launched operations against Iran. The Trump administration has called on manufacturers to increase their role in weapons production as U.S. arms stocks were heavily drawn down during the first 40 days of conflict.
