Parties welcome return of BSF jawan

Kolkata, May 14 (UNI) The safe return of BSF constable Purnam Kumar Shaw, who had been detained by Pak Rangers after reportedly crossing into their territory by mistake on April 23, has prompted huge relief and gratitude.
Purnam was released by the neighbouring country on Wednesday at 10.30 am.
BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi shortly after Shaw's release.
“A heartfelt thank you to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji for once again proving that under your strong and decisive leadership, no Indian is ever left behind,” Majumdar wrote on his X handle minutes after the development.
“Today, the safe return of BSF jawan Shri Purnam Kumar Shaw, who was in Pakistan's custody since April 23, is not just a moment of relief, it's a victory of India's resolve, diplomacy, and national pride. Your relentless commitment to the nation's security and dignity has ensured justice and honour for our brave soldiers,” he added.
The BSF confirmed Shaw’s repatriation in an official statement. “Today at 1030 hrs Constable Pürnam Kumar Shaw has been taken back from Pakistan by BSF at the Attari Wagah border. Constable Purnam Kumar Shaw had inadvertently crossed over to Pakistani territory. While on operational duty in the area of the Ferozepur sector on 23 April 2025 around 11:50 hrs and detained by Pak Rangers,” the release said.
“With the consistent efforts of BSF through regular flag meetings with Pakistan Rangers and through other communication channels, the repatriation of BSF Constable has become possible,” it said.
Shaw, a member of the BSF’s 24th Battalion based in Ferozepur, Pathankot, had reportedly crossed into Pakistan’s Punjab province while resting under a tree during an operational duty. He was taken into custody by the Pakistan Rangers.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) also welcomed the development. “After days of anxiety and uncertainty, BSF Jawan Purnam Kumar Shaw has finally been repatriated,” TMC posted on their X handle.
“ Mamata Banerjee personally reached out to his wife multiple times, offering reassurance and support during the ordeal. We wish Purnam a full recovery from the trauma he endured and hope he finds peace in the embrace of his loved ones,” the post read.
The Chief Minister had been in regular contact with Shaw’s wife, Rajani, and assured her of the state government’s support. Rajani had travelled to Ferozepur to meet BSF officials, who assured her that every effort would be made to secure her husband’s return.
