Paresh Rawal calls AR Rahman ‘You are our pride’ amid controversy

New Delhi, Jan 19 (UNI) Actor Paresh Rawal expressed his admiration for AR Rahman after the music composer spoke about his connection with India, music, and culture, following backlash over his controversial remarks about Bollywood.
Sharing a video of Rahman on X, Rawal wrote, “We love you, sir. You are our pride.”
Earlier, AR Rahman shared his first message after the controversy, which erupted over comments he made about the Hindi film industry. Posting a video on Instagram, the Oscar-winning composer indirectly addressed the backlash but reflected on his deep bond with India and his lifelong dedication to music and culture.
Rahman, in his first message after the controversy, chose to address the matter indirectly, reflecting instead on his enduring bond with India and his lifelong devotion to music and culture. Posting a video on Instagram, the Oscar-winning composer said,“Dear friends, music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating, and honouring a culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honour, and serve through music."
He added, “I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt. I feel blessed to be Indian, which enables me to create a space that always allows freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices.”
Rahman also highlighted some of his notable projects, including Jala, presented at the Wave Summit before the Prime Minister and Ruhi Noor; collaborations with young Naga musicians to form a string orchestra; mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra; building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band; and scoring Ramayana alongside Hans Zimmer.
“Each journey has strengthened my purpose. I remain grateful for this and committed to music that honours the past, celebrates the present, and inspires the future. Jai Hind and Jai Bharat,” he said.
The controversy began after Rahman’s interview with BBC Asian Network, where he said work from the Hindi film industry had slowed down for him in recent years, citing changes in the industry over the past eight years. His remarks triggered reactions from fans and film personalities alike.
