Panel opposes Roman script for Kokborok in Tripura school syllabus

Agartala, Apr 30 (UNI) Tripura royal scion and BJP’s ally in the state government, TIPRA Motha’s founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Wednesday expressed concern over a decision to change the syllabus of Kokborok language (spoken by tribals) without using Roman script.
Over the decades, tribal parties and society have been divided over the script selection for the Kokborok language. While a section wants Bengali script, the majority favoured the Roman script, and recently, another group suggested using Devanagari script. The state government has left the issue for the tribals to decide.
According to a report, the committee for syllabus upgrading and restructuring of Kokborok textbooks for Classes IX to XII, instructed the experts that literary works in the Roman script will not be accepted in the updated syllabus, which triggered a serious reaction from the tribals.
