Overcoming social taboo, Dalit groom rides horse in Rewari village under police supervision

Chandigarh, Nov 13 (UNI) For the first time in 150 years, a Dalit groom rode a horse during his wedding procession in Kheri Dalu Singh village of Bawal in Rewari district on Thursday. The historic procession, marking the end of a long-standing social taboo, was held under tight security as police teams from three stations were deployed, supervised by the local DSP.
According to officials, the groom, Ankit, who works with the Animal Husbandry Department, fulfilled a wish that generations of his community had been unable to realize due to a deep-rooted caste-based custom in the village. “Since the establishment of our village, no groom from our community had ever taken out a horse procession. Several people tried before but failed due to fear of backlash,” said Ankit.
Anticipating resistance, the groom’s family sought protection from the Rewari Police, district administration, and the National Human Rights Commission. Responding to their request, the authorities ensured adequate security arrangements. The wedding procession proceeded peacefully from Kheri Dalu Singh to Ateli in the presence of police personnel and a duty magistrate.
