Over 17 mn taxpayers filed Income Tax Returns so far: I-T Department

New Delhi, Jul 12 (UNI) More than 17 million taxpayers have filed their Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27 so far, the Income Tax Department said on Saturday, urging eligible taxpayers yet to file their returns to complete the process before the deadline.
In a post on social media platform X, the department said, "Over 17 million taxpayers have already taken the smart step and filed their ITRs for A.Y. 2026-27."
It added that over one million returns were filed on Friday alone, indicating a sharp rise in filings as the due date approaches.
The last date to file ITR-1 (Sahaj) and ITR-2 for income earned during the financial year 2025-26 is July 31.
ITR-1, also known as Sahaj, is a simplified return form designed for resident individuals with an annual income of up to Rs 50 lakh.
It can be used by taxpayers earning income from salary or pension, owning one house property, and having agricultural income of up to Rs 5,000 in a financial year.
Meanwhile, ITR-2 is meant for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) that do not have income from business or profession but earn income from sources such as capital gains.
The Income Tax Department has been encouraging taxpayers to file their returns well before the deadline to avoid last-minute technical issues and ensure faster processing of refunds.
Ahead of the last date for the ITR filing, the department has started sending the alerts to taxpayers.
The messages are part of the department's effort to encourage taxpayers to file their returns early and avoid the last-minute rush that often leads to errors, delays and technical glitches. UNI VK SAS
