Office of Economic Adviser to release revised series of Index of Core Industries

New Delhi, Jul 17 (UNI) The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will launch the revised series of the Index of Core Industries (ICI) with 2022-23 as the new base year on July 20, replacing the existing 2011-12 base year series.
The revised series, compiled by the Office of Economic Adviser (OEA), will be released at 5:00 PM on July, 20 and will include the provisional ICI data for June 2026 along with the back series from April 2023 to May 2026, covering 38 months.
One of the key changes in the revised series is the inclusion of Iron Ore as a core industry, increasing the total number of core industries from eight to nine. The government said iron ore has been added due to its extensive use in industrial production and its significant contribution to India's industrial development.
The revised ICI has also aligned its methodology with the recently updated Index of Industrial Production (IIP) 2022-23 series released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The weights assigned to core industries have been derived from the IIP basket and redistributed on a pro-rata basis to total 100.
Another major methodological revision relates to the steel sector. The updated ICI will now use gross steel production data for compiling the Steel Index instead of the net production data used under the 2011-12 series. The move is aimed at ensuring consistency with the IIP methodology.
The coal sector has also undergone a revision. Under the new series, only Raw Coal will be included, while Coal Middlings and Washed Coal have been removed to eliminate double counting since both are derived from raw coal.
The Index of Core Industries, released every month, tracks the performance of the country's key infrastructure sectors and serves as an important indicator of industrial activity.
The revised series is expected to provide a more accurate reflection of the current structure of the economy and improve comparability with other official industrial output indicators. UNI VK SAS
