IMD forecasts thunderstorms and rain in Punjab and Haryana, with wind gusts up to 60 kmph

Panchkula, Oct 7 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi as a fresh spell of unsettled weather affects northwest India, with wind speeds likely to reach up to 60 kmph at isolated locations on October 7.
According to the IMD's All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued at 8:25 a.m., isolated to scattered rainfall is expected over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi from October 7 to 12. Similar rainfall activity is expected over Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during October 7-12. The department forecasts isolated thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, reaching up to 60 kmph, over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on October 7.
Wind intensity is expected to decrease over the next two days. However, thunderstorms, lightning, and winds of 30-40 kmph, gusting to 50 kmph, are likely in the region during October 8-9. The IMD's latest online subdivision warnings confirm thunderstorm and lightning alerts for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on October 7, 8, and 9. No warnings are in place for these areas from October 10 to 13. A western disturbance remains a trough within the middle and upper-tropospheric westerlies.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation over south Haryana and its surrounding areas at 0.9 km above mean sea level also persists, according to the IMD. A trough runs from West Uttar Pradesh and its neighbourhood to the north Bay of Bengal across southeast Uttar Pradesh, northeast Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and north Odisha. Punjab could see isolated rainfall in the seven-day forecast on October 7, increasing to scattered rainfall on October 8 and 9, then returning to isolated rainfall through October 13.
Rainfall through October 13. Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are expected to receive isolated rainfall on October 7 and 8, scattered rainfall on October 9, and isolated rainfall thereafter. Uttar Pradesh could receive scattered rainfall during October 7-9, while scattered rainfall is forecast over Jammu and Kashmir-Ladakh throughout the seven-day period. No heavy rainfall warning has been issued for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, or Delhi in the October 7 bulletin. The primary weather risks are thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
The IMD reported that minimum temperatures on October 6 were appreciably above normal at some locations in Punjab, and above normal at several places in both Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi. Maximum temperatures were above normal at some locations in Punjab, while isolated areas in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi recorded appreciably above-normal daytime temperatures. The highest maximum temperature across the country's plains was 40.1 degrees Celsius at Pilani in Rajasthan. Elsewhere in India, the IMD forecasts isolated heavy rainfall over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on October 7. Bengal and Sikkim are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall on October 8, while Bihar is expected to experience thunderstorms, lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, on October 7.
Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, and Bihar could also experience gusty thunderstorms in the coming days. In southern India, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal are likely to receive isolated heavy rainfall from October 8 to 10. Heavy rain is forecast for Kerala and Mahe during October 9 and 10. Thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are also likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from October 7 to 10, and over Kerala-Mahe and Lakshadweep from October 9 to 10. Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema are likely to experience strong surface winds during October 7 and 8. East Madhya Pradesh is forecast to receive isolated to scattered rainfall from October 7 to 9, and Chhattisgarh from October 7 to 10. Isolated to scattered rain is also likely over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra on October 7. The southwest monsoon withdrawal line continues to pass through Supaul, Ranchi, Raipur, Brahmapuri, Parbhani, Baramati and Harnai, the IMD said.
