Monsoon withdrawal set to advance across Haryana, Punjab; rain likely on Oct 6-7: IMD

Panchkula, Oct 2 (UNI) Conditions are likely to become favourable for further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Haryana and Punjab during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

The line of withdrawal currently passes through 32.5 degrees north/72.5 degrees east, Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa, Naliya and 23 degrees north/67.8 degrees east, according to the IMD's morning bulletin issued at 7:46 a.m. The weather office said conditions were also likely to become favourable for further withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from the remaining parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, most parts of Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, the entire Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and some parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra during the next 24 hours.

Despite the advancing withdrawal, another spell of rain is likely over parts of northwest India early next week. The IMD forecast isolated rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi and Punjab on October 6 and 7. Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are also likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall during October 6-7, while similar conditions are forecast over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during October 5-7.

The seven-day forecast shows HHaryana, Chandigarh, Delhi,and Punjab remaining dry from October 2 to 5, followed by isolated rainfall during October 6-8. No weather warning has, however, been issued for Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi or Punjab for any day from October 2 to 8, according to the IMD's latest subdivision-wise warning. A western disturbance, earlier seen as a cyclonic circulation over north Haryana and its neighbourhood, had become less marked, while an associated trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies had moved away east-northeast awards, the IMD said.

In east and northeast India, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Odisha, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during October 2-7. Gangetic West Bengal is also likely to receive rainfall during the period, while Bihar and Jharkhand could see rain during October 5-7. The IMD forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh on October 2, along with thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places across parts of the northeast. In western India, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra throughout October 2-7.

In southern India, fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast over Kerala and Mahe during October 2-7. Isolated to scattered rainfall is also expected over Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Lakshadweep and parts of Karnataka during the period. Heavy rainfall is likely over Kerala and Mahe during October 4-6 and over South Interior Karnataka on October 5.

Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph and gusting to 60 kmph are likely over Kerala and Mahe, Lakshadweep and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on October 2. In central India, isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over East Madhya Pradesh on October 2-3 and over Chhattisgarh during October 2-7, the IMD said.
