IMD issues updated forecast: Heavy rain and thunderstorms, with winds up to 60 kmph, expected in Haryana
Panchkula, Sep 27 (UNI) The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts widespread rainfall in Haryana on Sunday, including heavy showers at isolated locations and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds up to 60 kmph.
The IMD predicts widespread rainfall over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on September 27, with isolated to scattered showers expected on September 28 and 29. Punjab is likely to experience isolated to scattered rainfall from September 27 to 29. Heavy rainfall is expected at isolated locations in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Sunday.
Thunderstorms with lightning and winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are also likely at isolated places in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab. The weather department reported rainfall at several locations in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab between 8:30 am Saturday and 5:30 am Sunday. This rainfall coincides with the ongoing withdrawal of the southwest monsoon from north west India. According to the IMD, the withdrawal line currently passes through Gurdaspur, Chandigarh, Muzaffarnagar, Aligarh, Dholpur, Udaipur, Deesa, and Naliya.
By 5:30 am Sunday, a depression over southeast Uttar Pradesh had weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over northern central Uttar Pradesh. It is expected to move north-northwest and weaken further within the next 12 hours. The IMD advises farmers in Haryana to postpone irrigation, intercultural operations, and the application of fertilisers and plant protection measures. Farmers should also ensure adequate drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Elsewhere, the most severe rainfall warning for Sunday applies to Uttarakhand, where heavy to very heavy rain and isolated extremely heavy rainfall are likely. Himachal Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh may receive heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations. Isolated heavy rain is also forecast for East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi.
In central India, widespread rainfall is expected over East Madhya Pradesh on Sunday and over Chhattisgarh on Sunday and Monday. Isolated heavy rainfall is forecast for both East and West Madhya Pradesh on September 27. The IMD expects isolated to scattered rainfall in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bihar, and the northeastern states in the coming days. Assam and Meghalaya may receive isolated heavy rainfall on September 29 and 30. In southern India, rainfall is forecast for parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Lakshadweep this week. Heavy rain is likely in South Interior Karnataka on September 28 and from September 30 to October 1, with isolated very heavy rainfall expected on September 29.
Heavy rain is also forecast for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from September 30 to October 1, and for Kerala from October 1 to 2. Notably, the IMD has issued a warning for squally weather over the Andaman Sea and Andaman Islands, with winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, expected over the next 48 hours. Rough to very rough sea conditions are likely, and fishermen are advised to avoid specified areas of the Bay of Bengal and North Andaman Sea. The forecast is based on the IMD's All India Weather Summary and Forecast Bulletin issued at 9.11 am on September 27.
