Japan welcomes ratification of Sweden's NATO bid by Turkish parliament

Tokyo, Jan 25 (UNI) Japan welcomes the Turkish parliament's decision to ratify Sweden's membership bid, given that cooperation among the alliance's member states is becoming increasingly important amid the emergence of new international challenges, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said on Thursday.
On Tuesday, the Turkish parliament ratified the protocol on Sweden's accession to NATO in a 287-to-55 vote with four abstentions after 20 months of delay. The decision will go into effect once Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signs the corresponding decree. Erdogan has 15 days to consider signing the document.
"The international situation is getting tougher. The cooperation among the allies is getting more important. So the application by Sweden to join NATO is supported by Japan, and we pay respect to the efforts to conclude the procedure," Hayashi told a press conference.
