Bangladesh: Killings of army men during military ruler Zia's regime to be prosecuted

By Mir Afroz Zaman
Dhaka, Apr 20 (UNI) The ruling Awami League government will prosecute the murder of military officers during the regime of military dictator Ziaur Rahman and also the arson attacks supported by the BNP-Jamaat clique from 2013 to 2015.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this at an event today (April 19).
PM Sheikh Hasina said, "I don't know any language to console you. Because, like you, I heard one day that I had nothing left (after the murder of my parents and brothers). (Some) criminals have already been punished while (some) are getting it. And (the rest) will face punishment.”
Sheikh Hasina was exchanging pre-Eid greetings with family members of military officers and soldiers killed during the regime of military dictator Ziaur Rahman, family members of those killed and injured during BNP-Jamaat gang arson attacks from 2013 to 2015, and businessmen and shopkeepers affected by the recent fire at Bangabazar Market at her official residence Ganabhaban.
Pointing out that people have forgotten what military dictator Ziaur Rahman did during his regime, the Prime Minister said that Zia first killed the Father of the Nation on August 15, 1975 and then killed four national leaders in prison on November 3 of the same year.
Sheikh Hasina said that Zia later staged one coup after another and killed many military officers. Ziaur Rahman killed the military officers even the victims did not know what were their faults.
She said that Zia not only killed the military officers, but also killed thousands of Awami League leaders and activists.
Regarding the recent spate of fires in the capital, the Prime Minister said, "I suspect that the BNP-Jamaat alliance may be involved in these misdeeds, as they have committed various misdeeds in the past.
Noor Nahar Begum, wife of Bangladesh Air Force Sergeant Delwar Hossain, who was hanged in a farcical military trial by military dictator Ziaur Rahman, has described how her husband was inhumanely killed and buried in a mass grave at Azimpur Cemetery.
72-year-old Noor Nahar demanded immediate justice for her husband's murder in her lifetime, saying, "Then all the people of the world will know what Ziaur Rahman did."
She demanded the construction of a monument on the site of the mass graves of military officers killed during the regime of military dictator Ziaur Rahman.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina broke down in tears after hearing Noor Nahar Begum's painful narrative.
Sub-Inspector of Police Maqbul Hossain said that in 2013 he lost both his wrists in a bomb attack by BNP-Jamaat men while on duty in Sahebbazar area under Boalia police station of Rajshahi.
He said, “A month and a half after joining the police, I lost my wrists. I cannot caress my children with my hands and when my children ask 'where are your hands (wrist)'? I can't answer. I demanded immediate trial for the incident.”
Awami League publicity and publication secretary Dr. Abdus Sobhan Golap conducted the programme.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan were present on the occasion.
