Panel voting returns in 28 municipal corporations , Mumbai to follow single-vote ward system, Multi-seat ballots cause voter confusion

Mumbai, Jan 13 (UNI) With municipal corporation elections returning after a gap of several years, voters across Maharashtra, barring Mumbai, are grappling with confusion over the reintroduced panel system of voting that will be followed in 28 civic bodies across the state.
Mumbai, which falls under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, will continue with the traditional single-member ward system. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is divided into 24 administrative wards and 227 electoral wards, where voters will cast a single vote to elect one corporator, similar to the process followed in Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections.
In contrast, municipal corporations in the rest of Maharashtra will conduct polls under the panel or multi-member ward system as provided under the Maharashtra Municipal Corporations Act. Under this arrangement, voters are generally required to elect four corporators from a single panel, though in certain areas the number may be limited to three, depending on population size and administrative demarcation.
