Johor, Jan 24 (UNI) Pakistan closed their Women's Under-19 World Cup campaign on a positive note, defeating Samoa in the ranking playoffs on Friday.
The match, held for teams without wins in the group stages, showcased a commendable batting performance from Pakistan, coupled with Samoa’s inexperience in bowling.
Opting to field first, Samoa’s bowlers conceded 21 extras, including 18 wides, aiding Pakistan to a competitive total of 136 for 8. Maham Anees led the way with a steady 28 off 42 balls, while Fatima Khan contributed a quickfire 25 off just 14 balls, including three fours and a six.
Three other batswomen chipped in with double-digit scores to bolster the innings. Samoa's standout bowler, medium-pacer Norah Salima, impressed with figures of 3 for 25, maintaining an economical five runs per over.
Samoa, who struggled with scores of 16 and 40 in earlier matches, showed improvement with the bat. Despite losing three wickets by the end of the third over, they kept pace with the required run rate during the initial half of their innings. Haniah Ahmer, Pakistan's star bowler, dismantled Samoa's hopes with a brilliant spell of 4 for 17, including two crucial strikes in the same over.
Opener Verra Farane top-scored for Samoa with 19, while other players chipped in with smaller contributions. However, Samoa's innings folded at 84, falling short by 52 runs.
Pakistan’s disciplined bowling and an improved batting display marked a fitting end to their tournament journey.
Further updates awaited.
